The Urnes style was used as a decorative element on a variety of jewelry towards the end of the Viking Age and was widespread in northern Europe from Ireland to Russia. The church was named after the Urnes Stave Church in the Norwegian town of Ornes near the Sognefjord.

It was built around the year 1100 and is considered the oldest stave church in the world. The Urnes Stave Church combines the traditions of Viking art with Celtic influences and the architectural styles of the Romantic period, thus giving its name to an entire art movement, the Urnes style.
